When it comes to physical appearance, many realize that the face is the most important component of the body. Individuals constantly analyze their own, as well as other people's faces unconsciously. Facial plastic surgeons are professionally trained to analyze the face. During a professional analysis the face is divided into different parts (nose, eyes, lips, eyebrows and such) and each part is analyzed thoroughly. The facial plastic surgeon breaks down each part into skin, fat, muscle, cartilage and bone. Each one of these units is evaluated separately and in relation to the other. Finally, the face as a whole, is compared to the rest of the body (height and weight). All of these are well documented in a systematic fashion. The problem areas are identified and all the treatment options are evaluated. These options are tested on the patient's photos by use of digital imaging. Individual photos are modified on the computer to see if the proposed treatment is cosmetically pleasing.

For Instance, if a patient seeks a consultation because he or she is unhappy with his or her nose, the following evaluations are preformed: the overall shape of the nose is analyzed in relation to the rest of the face and body (for example, a long skinny nose does not look good on a short person with a round face) then, all of the components of the nose are examined, paying attention to the overlying skin, the muscles pulling on the nose, the cartilage and the bone. Multiple view digital photos are taken. All the problems are carefully identified and documented. A detailed surgery is then designed by the surgeon. The surgical plan is tested using advanced computer imaging to see if the planned nose with enhance the face. If not, the plans are modified until satisfied. Lastly, the plan is executed during surgery. This exercise is performed for any facial procedure.
