Microdermabrasion
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a quick non-invasive treatment used to improve skin texture for a more refreshed appearance. It helps repair facial skin that takes a beating from the sun and the effects of aging and also can be performed on people who want to reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation or fine wrinkles. It can be used on all skin types and skin tones.
What are the advantages of having Microdermabrasion?
- Softens and smoothes the skin giving it a "refreshing" glow
- Stimulates collagen production and new cell growth
- Reduces acne and softens acne scars
- Treats fine lines and age spots
Who is a good candidate for Microdermabrasion?
If you have:
- Dull, weathered skin
- Acne and acne scars
- Uneven skin tone/blotchy pigmentation
- Fine wrinkles
What does a Microdermabrasion treatment involve?
During the treatment, a small handheld device with an exfoliating tip is passed over the skin several times. Loosened "dead" skin is removed along with dirt and debris from the skin's surface and is suctioned back up into the machine. There is no pain involved and many people actually describe it as a mild tingling sensation.
How long does a Microdermabrasion treatment take?
A treatment takes no more than 30 minutes.
How many Microdermabrasion treatments are required?
A series of 5 treatments are recommended initially at two week intervals and then repeated monthly for optimal results.
How long does it take to recover from Microdermabrasion?
There is no downtime.
When can I expect to see results from my Microdermabrasion?
You will notice a difference in your skin texture and tone immediately. Multiple treatments may be needed to achieve the final desired result. Once the desired result is achieved, periodic treatments are advised to maintain results.
When can I go back to work/resume my normal activities after having Microdermabrasion?
Immediately - there is no downtime.
How long will the results from having Microdermabrasion last?
The results vary depending upon how well you take care of your skin. Repeated treatments will stimulate the production of a new layer of skin cells, bringing with it an increased level of collagen and elastin, which further improves your skins appearance.
Continued protection from the sun and implementing a good skin-care regime can help in maintaining the results.
What are my alternatives to having Microdermabrasion?
Alternatives as well as additional procedures that would enhance the result are:
- Laser Skin Resurfacing
- Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
- Chemical Peel
- FotoFacial™
- Skin Care Products
Microdermabrasion exfoliates and gently resurfaces the skin, promoting new smoother, clearer skin. It is usually performed on the face and neck, but can be performed on any part of the body, such as the backs of the hands.
Microdermabrasion can correct uneven pigmentation, rough skin texture, some types of scarring, and age (liver) spots. It can also remove or improve whiteheads and black heads, some stretch marks, and fine wrinkles. By exfoliating superficial layers of the skin, Microdermabrasion allows new skin to appear and even stimulates the growth of new skin cells.
During the treatment, a small handheld device with an exfoliating tip is passed over the skin several times. Loosened "dead" skin is removed along with dirt and debris from the skin's surface and is suctioned back up into the machine. There is no pain involved and many people actually describe it as a mild tingling sensation. Some people with sensitive skin report a slight irritation but most people have no negative effects at all.
The procedure generally lasts from 15 to 30 minutes. It is often necessary to repeat the procedure to achieve the desired results. A typical regimen consists of four to eight treatments, at intervals of one to four weeks.
Immediately after the procedure, women can apply makeup and return to their normal activities. The skin may turn pink, like a "flush", immediately afterward, but this color will fade within a few hours.
